Promotion Eligibility and Consideration
To be considered for promotion beginning on July 1 of the following year, please contact Rhea Quimson (quimsonr@medicine.washington.edu) and Dr. Susan Stern by November 1 of the preceding year (i.e. to be considered for promotion July 1, 2017, ensure promotion consideration is communicated by November 1, 2016). Clinical faculty promotions require a vote of the Division faculty senior in rank (i.e. Assistant rank and above vote on Instructor promotions).
Criteria for Promotion
Full-Time Clinical Faculty (FTCF):
Clinical Assistant Professor
- Demonstrated excellence in professionalism, clinical competence and clinical productivity
- Clinical service and teaching will be considered
- Professional service and scholarship may be considered
Clinical Associate Professor
In addition to the above criteria, this rank requires clinical experience which has matured over time with local or regional recognition for clinical excellence.
Clinical Professor
In addition to the above, this rank requires:
- Local and regional recognition as a leader in the discipline as evidenced by accomplishments in clinical care, clinical program development, teaching, service in national or international professional societies or scholarly publications
- Distinguished and substantial professional activity in patient care over an extended period of time
- Dedication to the programs of the division, department and school
Non-Paid Clinical Faculty:
Clinical assistant professor
- Substantial contribution to medical education, the medical profession, or the standing of the profession in the community
- Minimum 50 hours/year or equivalent effort when averaged over 3 years
Clinical Associate Professor
- High quality contributions of a substantial nature to the mission of the division, department and the school over a prolonged period of time
- Minimum 100 hours/year or equivalent effort when averaged over 3 years
Clinical Professor
- High quality contributions of a substantial nature to the mission of the division, department and the school over a prolonged period of time
- Minimum 150 hours/year or equivalent effort when averaged over 3 years
- National or extensive local and regional recognition as a leader in the discipline
Promotion Package
The Clinical Faculty promotion package includes the following:
- Letter of support from Division Head
- Letter of concurrence from Service Chief
- Letter of concurrence from joint department, if applicable
- Internal letters of support (minimum of three)
- CV
- Teaching and peer evaluations (FTCF only)
The evaluation of clinical teaching skills and clinical competence may include the following:
- Clinical Teaching Assessment Forms collected from medical students, residents, and fellows
- Ratings of classroom teaching
- Ratings of lectures given for continuing medical education courses
- Ratings of teaching skills demonstrated in other settings such as professor’s rounds and noon conferences
- Peer ratings of clinical competence and clinical teaching
