Biography

Dr. Mitchell is an emergency physician and the Medical Director of the Emergency Department (ED) at Harborview Medical Center. For the COVID-19 pandemic he is also serving as the Western Washington COVID Coordination Center (RC3) Medical Director. He cares for patients in the ED at Harborview. He works with the HMC ED operations team to optimize the collaboration, coordination and collegiality required to care for patients seeking care in the emergency department.

Dr. Mitchell studies emergency department operations, emergency airway management, and geriatrics. Currently he is participating in multi-center trials which evaluate the effectiveness of intubation techniques and medications on emergency airway management and evaluating the impacts of outside radiologic interpretation discrepancies on ED operations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he founded and is leading the coordination center which manages the distribution and level-loading of COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization across Washington State. He has received funding from the Washington Department of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services to carry out these efforts.
