The Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to announce that Dr. Herbie Duber, received the 2023 Public Health Leadership Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM).
The award recognizes a candidate's accomplishments in public health, including the development of an effective solution to Emergency Medicine and public health challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration across the field of healthcare and/or other sectors such as technology or government/policy. Additionally, the degree of impact made on a local, regional, national, and/or international level.
Dr. Duber serves as an Associate Professor and is the Founding Head of the UW Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) Section of Population Health, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Departments of Global Health and Health Metrics Sciences, and as affiliate faculty within the UW Center for Health Innovation and Policy Science.
Dr. Duber has worked closely with Public Health – Seattle & King County on a variety of initiatives, including leading a county-wide collaborative to scale up ED-based HIV as part of the national effort to end the HIV epidemic. He also led the development of ED-based Hepatitis C testing, working closely with Dr. Nina Kim, Laboratory medicine, IT analytics and associated clinics and community partners, bringing together an interdisciplinary group with unique perspectives.

Dr. Duber’s expertise, deep dedication and the quality of his work within the domain of public health were recently recognized with a new appointment within the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) as the Regional Medical Officer for Northwest WA. In this newly created position, he will be responsible for supporting local public health and health system activities across 12 counties.
