Dr. Richard Utarnachitt, along with colleagues from Seattle Children's Hospital (Taylor Sawyer, DO, Lisa Davidson, DNP, and Andrew Mason, RN), recently published “Development and Testing of a Neonatal Intubation Checklist for an Air Medical Transport Team” in Air Medical Journal.
In the study, a 'call and response' check list was developed and checklist for neonatal intubation. The effectiveness was evaluated during a baseline assessment and two practice sessions after a checklist orientation. Intubation proficiency was evaluated using a validated assessment tool that included a proficiency score, a global rating scale (GRS) score, and time to perform the procedure. The use of a neonatal intubation check list can improve proficiency and safety as well as decrease time to intubation in this high risk population.
Dr. Utarchanitt is the Medical Director for Airlift Northwest and his research interests inlude air medical transportation and medical student education.
