Biography

Dr. Gatewood is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, the ED Director for Quality Improvement & Patient Safety (QIPS) for UWMC-Montlake Campus and Co-Chair of the UW Department of Emergency Medicine QIPS Council. In addition to working clinically at both HMC & UWMC, he champions continuous improvement in the care of UW Medicine patients presenting with STEMI, Cardiac Arrest, Sepsis and Acute Stroke. He is active in the education and administration of the emergency medicine residency, as well as numerous other interdisciplinary collaborations.

Dr. Gatewood earned his bachelor's degree in studio art and neuroscience from Williams College and his M.D. from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at the Harvard affiliated emergency medicine residency at Massachusetts General and Brigham & Women's Hospitals in Boston, where he also served as a chief resident. He came to UW Medicine in 2005, has twice been named a "Teacher of the Year" by the UW Emergency Medicine Residency as well as the Madigan Army EM Residency, has been named a "Top Doctor" in the Seattle Met Magazine five times, was awarded the UW Medicine Quality & Safety Hero Award as well the UWMC Chief of Medicine Service Award.

Dr. Gatewood is board certified in emergency medicine and serves as an oral examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine's certification examination. He has served as the local ED site lead for the National Emergency Airway Registry (NEAR) as well as for the ACCESS Trial (Access to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in Patients Without ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Resuscitated from Out-of-Hospital Ventricular Fibrillation Cardiac Arrest). He has also served as an Airway Medical Physician for the NFL and Seattle Seahawks since 2012.
