Credentialing Forms
Your credentialing forms should be completed with the Madigan GME office at least 90 days prior to your rotation. Please note, you will need to provide a U.S. Passport, Permanent resident card or non-WA/IL/MN/MO/NM driver’s license to receive a base pass. Please bring this with you to JBLM. Your WA driver’s license will not be accepted.
Orientation Information
You will receive a temporary gate pass for your first day. Once you have your Madigan badge, you can return to main gate to get your gate pass extended through your clerkship.
Clinical Schedule
Students will be scheduled for an average of 16 clinical shifts and a minimum of 12. This is dependent on the number of outside clinical rotators scheduled for the same period of time.

Didactics and Skills Lab
The first & second (usually) Wednesdays of the clerkship you will attend didactics and skills lab at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. These run from 8am-12pm. You will not be scheduled clinically these mornings and the proceeding evening. A lecture schedule will be emailed to you prior to your first day.
IV CEX
Students are to place a peripheral IV under the supervision of a nurse-teacher during the first week of their clerkship. See these guidelines.
Bioethics Essay
There are many ethical dilemmas faced in the ED on a daily basis, such as in this clerkship bioethical reading. Pick one such situation you encountered during your EM clerkship and describe what you learned from it. You may prewrite your bioethics essay, 500 words maximum, then copy and paste into the OneDrive link sent to you by the clerkship administrator. Your bioethics essay must be posted by the 3rd Wednesday of the clerkship. You are also required to respond to two other posts/comments on the OneDrive document on others’ bioethical essays by the 4th Wednesday of the clerkship.
Absentee Policy
Familiarize yourself with our absentee guidelines posted on our website. Absences (other than illness and emergencies) will affect your grade if they occur unannounced or without permission.
Final Exam
You will take the NBME “shelf” exam for EM. The exam will be on the final Friday of the clerkship, more information will be emailed prior to the test.
- The exam is online and consists of 110 questions. You will have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete it.
- We recommend the “Case Files for EM” book to prepare for the exam.
- The CDEM curriculum is also helpful in preparation.
Housing
Hotel-style accommodations containing kitchen facilities are available for students. A reservation will be made for you and the clerkship administrator will send you confirmation. Your accommodations will be directly billed to UWSOM.
