clerkship information

Credentialing

You should begin your credentialing process 6 weeks before the start of your rotation. Please contact the Site Coordinator, Liz Kelsey, at elizabeth.kelsey@mso.umt.edu to start this process. Please note that students are required to have a drug screen and a yearly TB (2-step TB or blood test)

Please e-mail Dr. Friend 3 weeks prior to your start date with schedule requests and to check in and ask about specifics regarding the 1st day of your rotation.

Clinical Schedule

You will have 13-15 clinical shifts, 8-12 hours in length. Shift times will be various hours within a 24-hour period.

IV CEX

Students are to place a peripheral IV under the supervision of a nurse-teacher during the first week of their clerkship. Please print and refer to these guidelines.

Bioethics Essay

There are many ethical dilemmas faced in the ED on a daily basis, such as in these student essay examples. Pick one such situation you encountered during your EM clerkship and describe what you learned from it. You may prewrite your bioethics essay, 500 words maximum, then copy and paste it into the OneDrive link sent to you by the clerkship administrator. Your bioethics essay must be posted by the 3rd Wednesday of the clerkship. You are also required to respond to two other posts/comments on the OneDrive document on others’ bioethical essays by the 4th Wednesday of the clerkship.

Please be mindful of patient privacy concerns. Please do NOT post any identifiable patient information that could compromise patient confidentiality.  Specifically, do not post names, addresses, exact age (range is fine—i.e. 20-25 year old male), specific date, hospital, full-face photographs or any other details that would allow someone to identify the patient from your post.

Final Exam

You will take the NBME “shelf” exam for EM. The exam will be on the final Friday morning of the clerkship, and details will be emailed prior to the test.

• The exam is online and consists of 110 questions. You will have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete it.
• We recommend the “Case Files for EM” book to prepare for the exam. 
• The CDEM curriculum is also helpful in preparation. 

Absentee Policy

Please familiarize yourself with our absentee guidelines posted on our website. Absences (other than illness and emergencies) will affect your grade if they occur unannounced or without permission.
