The Most Important Resources

This guide is created by experts in EM advising and is updated every couple of years. No matter which stage of planning you are in currently, you should look at this resource for information on planning, applying, interviewing, and ranking programs. It is all here!

Explore & Focus Schedule Planning:

  • To be supported by our Department in EM, and receive a Department Letter of Recommendation (called a Standard Letter of Evaluation or a SLOE), you must rotate at HMC/UWMC (MED EM 606).
  • If you are considering EM, it is advisable to take your required EM clerkship early, so you will have time to plan out your application in EM, or if it's not the specialty for you, find something else. It is ideal timing to rotate at HMC/UWMC in the Spring/Summer of your 3rd year.
  • You also need to complete an away rotation in EM, preferably at a site you would like to attend for residency.  This is a valuable way for you to get to know the program and an opportunity for you to impress them during the 4-week clerkship.  Your UW MED EM 606 rotation must be taken before your away rotation. You will receive an additional SLOE from your away site.
