Awards and Recognitions for UW EM in CDEM/CORD Special Issue

The Education team at the University of Washington Department of Emergency Medicine has garnered some well-deserved recognition in this year’s CORD/CDEM Special Issue in Educational Research and Practice in WestJEM.

Dr. Doug Franzen, Associate Professor and Associate Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, is co-author on two featured publications: (1) Calming Troubled Waters: A Narrative Review of Challenges and Potential Solutions in the Residency Interview Offer ProcessLR Hopson, MA Edens, M Goodrich, M Kiemeney, EB Werley, A Kellogg, D Franzen, and (2) More is More: Drivers of the Increase in Emergency Medicine Residency ApplicationsRD Huang, L Lufty-Clayton, D Franzen, A Pelletier-Bui, DC Gordon, Z Jarou, J Cranford, LR Hopson.

Dr. Jon Ilgen, Associate Professor, Director of the Medical Education Research Fellowship, and Associate Chair of Faculty Development and Education is senior author on one featured publication: Residents’ Perceptions of Effective Features of Educational PodcastsJ Riddell, L Robins, J Sherbino, A Brown, J Ilgen. Dr. Alisha Brown, UW EM Residency and Fellowship alumna, and former Associate Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program is also a co-author on this publication.

Dr. Jeff Riddell, former Medical Education Research Fellow and current Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the USC Keck School of Medicine, is co-author on two featured publications: (1) the publication listed above with Dr. Ilgen, and (2) The Challenging Case Conference: A Gamified Approach to Clinical Reasoning in the Video Conference EraS Kobner, M Grassini, NN Le, J Riddell.

Dr. Jeremy Branzetti, former Associate Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, is co-author of the featured publication: Transitioning Traditions in the Time of COVIDME Romeo, J Branzetti.

In addition to featured publications, UW EM Education team members were also recognized as Gold Standard reviewers. The Special Issue recognizes these contributors as reviewers who “stand out for their detailed reviews, grasp of the tenets of education scholarship, and efforts to provide feedback that mentors authors on how to improve.” Dr. Franzen, as well as Dr. Ilgen and his Medical Education Research Fellowship group, which includes Drs. Ashley AmickCaitlin SchrepelBjorn Watsjold, and Joshua Jauregui, were all listed as Gold Standard reviewers.
