biography
Dr. Michael Sayre became interested in EMS during residency when he was exposed to the challenges of delivering first-class medical care outside of a hospital while flying with the air medical program. In 1990, he joined the emergency medicine faculty at the University of Cincinnati and soon became the medical director of the Cincinnati Fire Department and the University of Cincinnati’s paramedic training program. While he had some phenomenal mentors, he made many mistakes as a novice EMS physician. He hoped others would have an easier path and founded the EMS Medicine Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati in 1995.
Dr. Sayre sought to measure outcomes from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation attempts in the Cincinnati area. That work led to involvement in developing international guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. He also helped lead randomized clinical trials of interventions for cardiac arrest first in Cincinnati and subsequently while on the faculty at the Ohio State University.
Dr. Sayre was recruited to join the faculty at UW in 2012. He established the UW EMS Medicine fellowship that began in 2014. That same year, Dr. Sayre became the medical director for the Seattle Fire Department and the Seattle Medic One program. He also serves as medical director for the University of Washington’s paramedic training program. He continues to participate in innovation and dissemination of best practices for cardiac arrest through involvement in the Resuscitation Academy and the Global Resuscitation Alliance programs.
