clerkship information

Please contact the Site Director to arrange your schedule, and to learn more about things that must be done prior to your first day.

Credentialing Forms

Swedish GME will send you an onboarding checklist of requirements to complete prior to your rotation. You may contact the GME office for any questions regarding credentialing, GMEOnboarding@swedish.org (206) 320-5301. Please complete all credentialing items 3-4 weeks in advance of your start, in order to be badged in time to start your rotation.

Orientation Information

Please obtain your credentialing and security badge prior to your first day on shift. Wear scrubs of choice (also available in the ED) with your white coat and bring a stethoscope.

A parking garage exists across the street from the ED and limited street parking is also available. Parking in the garage has a sliding fee.

During your first day on shift, you will be given a tour of the ED and a brief introduction to the EHR. The Site Director or another staff representative will be available to give you your orientation as well as introduce you to members on shift that day. Feel free to bring lunch/snacks as we have a refrigerator for staff use in the department. We have locked storage rooms but we do not encourage bringing valuables into the department as they are shared spaces with physicians, nurses, technicians, etc.

Clinical Schedule

Students will be scheduled for approximately 15 eight-hour shifts over the 4 week period.

IV CEX

Students are to place a peripheral IV under the supervision of a nurse-teacher during the first week of their clerkship. See these guidelines.

Bioethics Essay

There are many ethical dilemmas faced in the ED on a daily basis, such as in this  clerkship bioethical reading. Pick one such situation you encountered during your EM clerkship and describe what you learned from it. You may prewrite your bioethics essay, 500 words maximum, then copy and paste into the OneDrive link sent to you by the clerkship administrator. Your bioethics essay must be posted by the 3rd Wednesday of the clerkship. You are also required to respond to two other posts/comments on the OneDrive document on others’ bioethical essays by the 4th Wednesday of the clerkship.

Didactics and Skills Lab 

On the first & second (usually) Wednesdays of the clerkship, you will attend the didactics and skills lab at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. These run from 8 am-12 pm. You will not be scheduled clinically these mornings and the proceeding evening. A lecture schedule will be emailed to you prior to your first day.

Final Exam

You will take the NBME “shelf” exam for EM. The exam will be on the final Friday of the clerkship, more information will be emailed prior to the test.

  • The exam is online and consists of 110 questions. You will have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete it.
  • We recommend the “Case Files for EM” book to prepare for the exam. 
  • The CDEM curriculum is also helpful in preparation. 

Absentee Policy

Familiarize yourself with our absentee guidelines posted on our website. Absences (other than illness and emergencies) will affect your grade if they occur unannounced or without permission.
