Shadowing opportunities for UW School of Medicine students

We offer shadowing experiences in the HMC and UWMC Montlake ED for first and second-year UW medical students. This program is managed through the Department of EM student programs. An email will be sent at the beginning of each quarter to the first and second-year student listservs in Seattle, announcing that the signup is posted. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We will strive to ensure equity among students.

We have limited availability each quarter. We do not accept non-UW medical students at this time.

Objectives for the Observerships

  • Have an increased knowledge of the practice of Emergency Medicine
  • Be more comfortable in patient encounters through early patient contact
  • An opportunity for students to observe and possibly practice doctor-patient communication skills
  • Have an increased knowledge of the basics of doctor/patient communication
