biography

Dr. Ma is an emergency physician and the medical director for the emergency department at UWMC – Northwest Hospital. He strives to improve patient flow, quality, and experience in the emergency department and hospital settings, where care is increasingly complex with rapidly rising demands while resources remain constrained.

Dr. Ma received his MD from Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as class president. He attended the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he served as chief resident. He completed fellowship in emergency department leadership and administration along with a Master in Health Care Management degree from Harvard University.

Prior to joining UW, Dr. Ma was faculty at UT Health Houston, where he served in several leadership roles including as associate medical director of emergency services at Memorial Hermann Hospital and medical director of population health at Harris Health – LBJ Hospital. He was the founding fellowship co-director of the UT Health ED Administration and Operations Fellowship. His academic and administrative interests include solutions to hospital boarding and ED crowding, operations and flow management, population health, and emergency care delivery for vulnerable and underserved populations.
