Drs. Nick Johnson and Michael Sayre, along with UW colleagues Dr. Terri HoughDr. David Carlbom, and Ellen Caldwell published “The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome after Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes” in Resuscitation.

They linked data from the Seattle Medic One cardiac arrest registry to inpatient data for over 900 patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) over 7 years. They found that nearly 50% of patients met the criteria for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) within the first 48 hours of hospitalization and that patients who developed ARDS had higher hospital mortality, longer ICU stays more ventilator days and were less likely to survive with full neurologic recovery.
