Dr. Gallahue Co-Author on Study Exploring Gender and Resident Feedback

Dr. Fiona Gallahue is co-author on a study published in JAMA Network Open titled "Gender Differences in Emergency Medicine Attending Physician Comments to Residents: A Qualitative Analysis."

This unique study explores whether or not the written performance feedback emergency medicine (EM) residents receive from EM-attending physicians is associated with gender and the reasons for such disparities.

This multicenter qualitative analysis examined 10,488 narrative comments among EM faculty and EM residents between 2015 to 2018 in 5 EM training programs in the United States. Data were analyzed from 2019 to 2021.

In this qualitative study of narrative comments by EM faculty across 5 sites, significant differences were found in the presence, content, and specificity of resident performance feedback by gender. For example, women residents were more likely to be rated below level, with the conflation of procedural competency with procedural confidence.
