Dr. Ilgen appointed Associate Chair for Faculty Development and Education

Dr. Jonathan Ilgen earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine (2004).  He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and Children’s Hospital program, where he served as Chief Resident (2008).  Dr. Ilgen then completed his Master of Clinical Research (MCR) and Research Fellowship in Emergency Medicine Education at Oregon Health & Science University (2010).  

Since joining the UW faculty in 2010, Dr. Ilgen has contributed widely across the department and the UW School of Medicine education mission. Currently, he is an Associate Professor and the Associate Director of the University of Washington School of Medicine Center for Leadership & Innovation in Medical Education (CLIME). He is also the founding Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine Education Research Fellowship and has served as UW School of Medicine College Faculty since 2011.

This role will be essential for our ongoing development as a department, allowing us to further build on and take advantage of our many strengths, maximize our potential, and enhance our collaborations within and outside of the department.

Dr. Ilgen is passionate about educational scholarship and was recently accepted as a PhD candidate within the School of Health Professions Education at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.  He has published broadly in medical education but his particular focus of scholarship is in the area of cognitive bias and complex reasoning.  He currently serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education and for Advances in Health Sciences Education.  He is also a Faculty Mentor within the MedEd PORTAL Faculty Mentor Program of the AAMC, as well as a Member of the Educational Scholarship Task Force of the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD).
