Welcome, UW Emergency Medicine Resident Class of 2023
The University of Washington Department of Emergency Medicine is delighted to welcome 12 new incoming interns, who will begin their postgraduate training this summer.
Axel Adams
University of California, San Francisco
Axel was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and completed his BS in molecular biology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. Axel also earned his MS in science in health and medical sciences with an emphasis in clinical toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. His most recent research aims to develop high-throughput analytical modalities for application in emergency-medicine diagnostics and systems for cross-country surveillance of emerging psychoactive drugs. In addition, he actively participated in the Orange Kettlebell Club, and is the US record holder for the 105kg weight class in Long Cycle.

Ryan Cocca
Thomas Jefferson University
Ryan was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a BS in bioengineering. He also completed two years of graduate work in bioengineering at Penn. During medical school, he actively volunteered with the Jefferson Emergency Medicine Society and was also one of the founding members of the Jefferson Scientific Outreach Network. Ryan has played rugby for 13 years and spent three years as a collegiate coach. Before pursuing a medical career, he was a professional assistant chef for seven years.

Castrenze Fricano
University of Minnesota
Castrenze was born in Chicago, Illinois, and completed his BS in kinesiology at University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. He developed his passion for Emergency Medicine early in his undergraduate career while earning his certification as an emergency medical technician. He later worked at a local fire department during his first two years of medical school, serving on the EMS Committee. Castrenze was a founding member and inaugural VP of the Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) of the University of Minnesota. His hobbies include ice hockey and cooking.

Eleanor Ganz
University of Illinois - Chicago
Ellie was born in Libertyville, Illinois, and graduated from University of Wisconsin in Madison with a BS in biology. Ellie spent two months in Kenya where she conducted focus groups and key interviews with emergency department staff to evaluate and improve provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling at a teaching and referral hospital emergency department. Ellie’s volunteer experiences have included educational efforts focused on the intersections of health, climate, and sustainability in medicine. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and traveling.

Sarah Gartner
The Ohio State University
Sarah was born in Newark, Ohio, and completed her BS in bioengineering at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She is passionate about focusing on healthcare issues such as mental health accessibility, serving as the chair for the 2017 Health Professionals Summit on “Mental Health and Its Effect on You, Your Patients, and Your Community.” She also served on OSU President Michael Drake’s Mental Health Task Force while serving as Inter-Professional Council president at The Ohio State University. Sarah also spent a year at OSU as a student in emergency preparedness and disaster response advanced competency, also affiliated with FEMA. Some of Sarah’s hobbies include waterskiing, exploring new coffee shops and breweries, and creating new exercise routines.

Lucy Goodson
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Lucy was born in Newport News, Virginia, and graduated from Duke University in with a BA in cultural anthropology. Lucy was one of three students granted the opportunity to conduct psychological research in Fukushima, Japan, the site of the nuclear reactor meltdown in 2011. Before medical school, she worked as an intern at Mount Sinai Arnhold Global Health Institute, coordinating 25 pro bono medical and psychological evaluations of asylum seekers in the New York area. In her second year of medical school, Lucy was recognized for her work in LGBTQ and diversity advocacy. Aside from her love of emergency medicine, she enjoys long-distance cycling, rock climbing, yoga, poetry, and photography.

Laura Hancock
University of Colorado
Laura was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and completed her BS in biology and in biochemistry and molecular biology at Pennsylvania State University. She went on to earn her PhD in human medical genetics and genomics from the University of Colorado. Laura was an active participant in an Emergency Medicine Interest Group in Colorado, and also worked extensively as a lab technician conducting genetic experiments studying sepsis and innate immunity. In her free time, she enjoys skiing, hiking, rock climbing, and trivia.

Lynnette Lacek
Pennsylvania State University
Lynnette was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, with a BS in biochemistry and biophysics. She has extensive research experience, including participating in the Penn State Global Health Scholars Program, traveling to Koforidua, Ghana, to examine consumption and consumer knowledge of micronutrients among families in urban and rural communities. Among other hobbies, Lynnette enjoys participating in fitness activities such as the 2016 Tough Mudder, ballet barre, and Zumba.

Crystal Phares
University of Nevada, Reno
Crystal was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, and completed her BS in nursing at Nevada State College in Henderson, Nevada. Before starting medical school, she worked as an emergency and trauma traveling nurse, caring for both adult and pediatric patients, in hospitals all over the country, including Nevada, Texas, Massachusetts, and Colorado. She is the President and co-founder of the LGBTQIA Medical Student Alliance at the University of Nevada, Reno. Crystal loves spending time outdoors, and has spent a year traveling across the nation exploring the cultures of each region.

Mary Pinkston
University of Massachusetts
Nell was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, with a BSE in biomedical engineering. Her research experience includes conducting a retrospective study of treatment for superficial basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma; and she has participated in several community & UMMS initiatives involving addiction & substance abuse. She also studied the validity of non-invasive blood pressure techniques in the ICU as part of a four-year capstone scholarship & delivery course. Growing up in rural western Massachusetts, she developed a love for everything outdoors, including sailing, trail running, and camping.

Elinor Sveum
George Washington University
Elinor was born in Boulder, Colorado, and completed her BA in international studies at American University in Washington, DC. She earned her MSPH in international health and health systems from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In addition to her extensive research experience in the field of public health, she worked at the George Washington Healing Clinic, a student-run organization that operates a free immediate and primary care clinic to patients in need. Elinor was Captain of her NCAA Division I Swim and Dive Team, and loves skiing and trying new foods.

Cameron Turro
Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Cameron was born in Chappaqua, New York, and graduated from Arizona State University with a BS in biochemistry and a BS in psychology. While in medical school, he was the president of Recovered Medical Equipment for the Developing World (REMEDY), where he helped curate usable medical supplies and provide them to global health programs. He was also actively involved in EMIG and founded the student-run Critical Care Interest Group at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In his free time, he enjoys backpacking, camping, and boating.
