Unmatched Breadth and Depth of Training
As a UW EM resident, you will have the opportunity to treat a broad range of patients and train in the entire range of clinical settings including:
Harborview Medical Center (HMC) – A county hospital and the only Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma and Burn Center serving the WWAMI region --– Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. HMC has the third-highest trauma volume of any ED in the country.
University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) – a tertiary/quaternary care hospital. Number 1 ranked hospital in WA State. While in the ED and ICU at UWMC, you will treat the most critically ill and complex patients.
Seattle Children’s Hospital – a tertiary/quaternary care children’s hospital serving the WWAMI region. While there, you will treat children with complex medical and critical illnesses as well as those presenting with typical childhood illnesses and minor injuries.
Valley Medical Center – the largest community hospital in King County with a volume of 90,000 patients per year. You will get a first-hand view of the workings of a small democratic group in a large efficient community setting.
All of these entities are under the organization of UW Medicine. You will be prepared to practice in any setting upon graduation.
Rural and Austere Training Opportunities
You will have the opportunity to rotate in an austere environment, either global or domestic. Sites include St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center in Sun Valley, Idaho, and Peace Island Medical Center in Friday Harbor, Washington, in addition to Global Health opportunities within our Global Health pathway.
A Career Pathways Program that Promotes Self-Exploration & Discovery
Our 4-year program with its unique career pathways program provides you time to explore various EM career opportunities and your passions. Career pathways include EMS, ultrasound, critical care, global health, community and public health, medical education, research, sports medicine, toxicology, and quality improvement/ patient safety. And if none of those fit your interests, we’ll work with you to create a pathway that does! Each of these pathways includes a didactic and practical experience. Just as important, residents work closely with and are mentored by passionate faculty with national reputations in these areas of focus.
Renowned Faculty with Broad Interests and Expertise
Faculty interests and expertise include EMS, Population Health and Public Health, Opioid Use Disorder, Climate Change, Global Health, Resuscitation Science (cardiac arrest, sepsis, trauma), Health Services Research, Ultrasound, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Quality Improvement/Patient Safety, Simulation, and Medical Education.
Prehospital Experience Like None Other
Prehospital care in the Pacific Northwest is second to none and you will have full access to all opportunities. These include rotary and fixed-wing aeromedical critical care with Airlift Northwest, ground EMS experience with Seattle Fire Department and other regional agencies, event medicine experiences, and attendance at the world-renowned Resuscitation Academy. Research in prehospital care abounds in Seattle and residents regularly join in the fun!
