Dr. Stern elected to the National Academy of Medicine
Dr. Susan A. Stern, professor and founding chair emeritus of the Department of Emergency Medicine, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), one of the highest honors in health and medicine.
Election to NAM recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to advancing medical science, health care, and public health. Dr. Stern was selected for her work advancing the science of trauma resuscitation, particularly the treatment of uncontrolled hemorrhage during the critical early period following injury.
Her research has investigated novel resuscitation strategies, interventions and technologies across a range of injury patterns, including traumatic brain injury and post-injury coagulopathy. Collectively, her work has advanced trauma resuscitation science and contributed to improved outcomes for injured civilians and military personnel.
Dr. Stern joined the University of Washington in 2009 after 17 years on the faculty at the University of Michigan, becoming the founding chair of UW’s Department of Emergency Medicine. Under her leadership, the department grew from a division within the Department of Medicine into an academic department with a broad clinical, educational and research mission.
Dr. Stern earned her bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. She completed her emergency medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati, followed by a research fellowship in resuscitation science. She is board-certified in emergency medicine and has served on the board of directors of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.
NAM announced the election of 90 regular members and 10 international members this year. Members are elected by their peers in recognition of their significant contributions to health and medicine.
