Dr. Hendershot named NIH SIREN Fellow

The Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to announce that Dr. Kris Hendershot has been selected as a 2025–26 NIH SIREN (Strategies to Innovate Emergency Care Clinical Trials Network) Fellow through the University of Washington hub.
The competitive fellowship supports early-career investigators committed to advancing emergency care research. As part of the program, Hendershot will receive $12,000 in research funding to support coordination, data analysis, publication costs, or statistical consultation.
He’ll also engage in a variety of professional development and collaborative opportunities that align with his K12 career development plan, including national SIREN Fellow education sessions, participation in UW-led clinical trials, and involvement in initiatives such as the Intensivist Investigator workgroup.
Hendershot completed his emergency medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami and went on to complete a neurocritical care fellowship at UW. His academic work focuses on improving outcomes and decision-making for patients with severe acute brain injury (SABI). He is currently leading a grant-funded study exploring inequities in care trajectories for this population, including disparities in access to life-sustaining treatments, advance care planning, and hospice or palliative services.
As a SIREN Fellow, Hendershot will continue to build his expertise in caring for critically ill patients, with a particular focus on neurological emergencies. He will work closely with UW’s SIREN principal investigators, Drs. Peter Kudenchuk and Nick Johnson and contribute to the network’s mission of generating evidence-based solutions for emergency care.
