About
Welcome to your Emergency Department Rotation! We are so excited for you to join us!
The Emergency Department is a fast-paced learning environment with opportunities for you to treat a variety of complaints. Most importantly, there is a lot of learning that can be done! We encourage you to think about your specific learning goals during this rotation. Please share these specific goals with your attending and EM Senior resident on each shift.
You will find more information on this website about what to expect on shift, shift hours, resources, and general FAQs. There is no formal in-person orientation to our rotation, but we have made every effort to provide you with the essential information on this website, which is updated frequently to ensure you have a successful rotation. Make sure to familiarize yourself with your specific ED clinical site and read through the information provided before starting your rotation.
Onboarding
It is vitally important that you complete the required onboarding at least two weeks before the first day of your shift. If you do not complete this required onboarding, you will not have access to the ED-specific EMR and will not be able to work. You must complete these requirements as soon as possible. Please reach out to our education program coordinator, Jenny Harris (jch347@uw.edu), for questions and assistance.
Required items to complete prior to your start date:
- EPIC Training Modules 1-3
- MedHub Onboarding Documentation (non-UW residents only)
- Badging (non-UW residents only)
- Dragon profile (if you want to use dictation services)
ED POINTS OF CONTACT
EM Chief Residents: Pager (206) 314-8884 [OK to text or call], Email: emchiefs@uw.edu
- If you are running late to shift: You must page the EM chief pager to notify us that you are on your way. If you do not page us or notify us, we will assume you are absent and will contact your supervisor to find you and make sure you are okay.
- For any emergency which will require you to call out of your shift: If you need to call out or will be absent, you must page the EM chief pager and provide your phone number as soon as you are able. The EM Chief on call will call you back to discuss your situation. Do not email for call-outs or emergencies as the email is not monitored 24/7 and this can lead to delays in patient care.
- For any shift swap or scheduling questions: email the EM chiefs directly at emchiefs@uw.edu. Shift swaps are approved by the chief residents and must be approved no later than 48 hours before the start of the shift (but ideally with at least one week's notice). Please see the shift swap section in the scheduling page for rules regarding shift swaps and more information.
