Our vision
To improve the health of underserved communities by examining the social determinants of health, and the health-related impact of race and economic status on the most vulnerable populations. Our expertise spans a wide array of topics including:
- Environmental Health
- Health Disparities
- Public Health
- Data Analytics
- Health Services
- Emergency Medicine
- Global Health
Our Section aligns its efforts with the UW Population Health Initiative convened by President Ana Mari Cauce in May 2016, whose vision is to "help people live longer, healthier, more productive lives - here and around the world." This Initiative sees population health revolving around three pillars: human health, environmental resilience, and social and economic equity. As a Section in the Department of Emergency Medicine, our efforts are mainly in the realm of human health. We focus on the care of underserved populations and serve as a hub for research, clinical care, advocacy, and policy related to population health.
Education INITIATIVES
Global Emergency Medicine and Rural Health Fellowship
The Global Emergency Medicine and Rural Health Fellowship at the University of Washington is a new opportunity for fellows interested in spending dedicated time at the frontiers of emergency medicine both in the US and globally.
Population Health Research Fellowship
In order to materialize this vision, the Section of Population Health in the Department of Emergency Medicine offers a two-year Population Health Research Fellowship for graduates of accredited emergency medicine residency programs who are interested in pursuing academic careers in population health research.
Population Health Residency Pathway
The Population Health Section within the University of Washington Department of Emergency Medicine offers a robust Population Health curriculum to prepare our residents for future careers and academic focus on Population Health and care of the underserved. Our pathway includes three areas of focus: Global Health, Rural Health, and Social Emergency Medicine.
Global Scholars Program
In order to support the Department of Emergency Medicine’s growing footprint domestically and abroad, the Department has created the Global Scholars Program. This program has been designed to provide a structured means of receiving non-UW faculty, fellows, and occasionally senior residents from outside the United States, who have identified specific interests related to areas of expertise within the University of Washington Department of Emergency Medicine.
CLINICAL INITIATIVES
In addition to our research initiatives, the Section strives to implement best practices and deliver innovation in the clinical arena at Harborview and the University of Washington Medical Centers.
Partnering closely with other Departments, as well as Public Health Seattle & King County, we are leading efforts to bring a public health focus to the Emergency Department setting.
Examples of such work include:
- Implementing models of care to connect patients to evidence-based treatment strategies, including initiation of buprenorphine in the ED, and expedited outpatient referrals.
- Screening patients for social determinants of health to identify and address key health disparities.
- Creating innovative systems of care to reduce ED utilization.
- Screening patients for diseases of key public health concern and working to prevent disease and injury through vaccination and other preventive measures.
