about the UW Telebuprenorphine program

Buprenorphine Saves Lives

The UW Department of Emergency Medicine launched a Telebuprenorphine Program in partnership with Public Health—Seattle & King County to provide low-barrier medication for opioid use disorder on January 2, 2024.

This program offers daily treatment access from 9 AM to 9 PM through a free telehealth visit with one of our 13 Emergency Medicine physicians. For 24/7 crisis support, the Washington Recovery Helpline is available after hours.

Our team includes two dedicated Linkage to Care Coordinators who assist patients in connecting to ongoing care within 72 hours of their initial visit. This service is available to anyone 13 years or older who has opioid use disorder and resides in King County, WA.

FAQ's

Q: What is the minimum age for patients?

A: We treat anyone aged 13 or older who has opioid use disorder (OUD).

Q: How much does this service cost?

A: This is a free, non-billable service for all patients. However, your prescription costs may vary depending on your insurance coverage.

Q: I already have a buprenorphine prescription, but I’m running out, and my doctor can’t see me for three days. Can you help?

A: Yes! We can provide bridge prescriptions to ensure you have medication until you can see your regular provider.

Q: What happens after my first visit?

A: Our Linkage to Care Coordinators will follow up with you within 72 hours to help you start your prescription and connect you to ongoing care.

Q: Is there a limit to how many times I can call the hotline?

A: While we are always here to help, we are only able to prescribe buprenorphine twice within a two-week period.

Q: How long does a typical visit take?

A: Telehealth visits usually take 10-40 minutes, depending on your needs.

Q: Can I call the hotline if I’m in an inpatient facility?

A: Unfortunately, federal regulations prohibit receiving treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) from multiple providers simultaneously. This means we cannot prescribe medications if you are in a treatment center, inpatient facility, dialysis unit, emergency department, or similar setting. However, you’re welcome to call the hotline once you are no longer under their care, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
